Who Am I?

What’s up, y’all. My name is JR and for those of you who DON’T already know, I’m a huge Movie and TV Nerd. If you’re new here, I appreciate you taking the time to check out my website. I hope you’ll consider sticking around and joining the film community I’m trying to build here.

I’ve been an avid cinephile for as long as I can remember, but when I was in College, I got a part time job working at Blockbuster, and I think that’s when I began to develop a deeper appreciation for movies. As I began to watch more and more movies, I noticed that I started to become increasingly frustrated with a lot of them, especially when it came to the writing (hence the name of the website). I’d often ask myself, “Why did the writers write that line?” or “Why did they decide to make the Character do that?”. After years of asking myself those questions, I started to think about how I would change some of the Movies and TV Shows I was watching to make them better, until finally, one day I bought a screenwriting program and decided to give it a shot.

 

Fast forward ten years, and I’ve bought and read a ton of books on screenwriting. I’ve read over a hundred scripts, some of them scripts from some of my favorite Movies and TV Shows, and I’ve written a Feature Film, a handful of Short Films, a Limited Television Series and a handful of Web Series Pilots myself, with two more Feature Films and another Series in development. Now, on the other hand, I’ve written almost twenty shorts, features and series pilots that will NEVER see the light of day.

I say all of that to say, I know writing a good script is hard…and making that script into a good Movie or Series is even harder, but what makes a good Movie or TV Show? That’s what I’m here to talk about. I’m here to talk about new Movies and TV Shows (and which ones I think you should watch). I’m here to talk about which Movies and TV Shows are my favorites. I’m here to talk about my favorite Screenwriters, my favorite Producers, my favorite Directors, my favorite Actors…but most of all, I’m here to talk about how I feel premise, story, characters and dialogue can come together to make something truly interesting and enjoyable.

 

For years I’ve had people asking my opinions on new Movies at the box office and popular TV Shows, and so I thought, “ Maybe I should just start a blog and talk about those things there”, so here we are. And I want to be clear…my goal isn’t to sit up on my high horse and tell all of you that I know more about TV and Film than you do, and so you should all just listen to me.

My goal here is to create a community of avid Film and TV watchers that can go deeper when it comes to analyzing and discussing the Films and TV Shows we all love so much. So with that, I won’t keep you.
